At City on a Hill we believe God not only loves you and this world, but is able to do immeasurably more than we could ever think or imagine. He therefore invites us to bring all of our hopes, stresses, fears, temptations and needs to him because he loves us, and is able to act.

I'm New Here

WELCOME!

Welcome to City on a Hill – I’m sure you’ll find this site and our church a source of inspiration and encouragement for your life.

City on a Hill began at the end of 2007 (known then as Docklands Church) with a small team and a big vision to see Melbourne renewed with the great news of Jesus. Since then God has gathered many men and women of all ages with a passion to know Jesus and make him known.

As a community we meet every Sunday for our main services at 10:00am (Hoyts, Melbourne Central) and 6pm (James Squire, Docklands) where we hear relevant and practical messages from the bible about God, life and the world we live in. We pray, we sing, we hang out and then through the week we commit ourselves to being people of light and love in our city.

Whether you consider yourself a Christian, sceptic or someone just interested in finding out more, let me encourage you to visit one of our Sunday services and journey with us as we encounter God and explore his purpose for our lives. City on a Hill is part of St. James Anglican Church, and is in partnership with St. Judes’ Carlton. On behalf of City on a Hill, thank you for taking the time to visit, we look forward to seeing you soon.

Guy Mason

Pastor - City on a Hill

THE VISION

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” – Jesus (Matt. 5v14-16)

When Jesus first spoke these words he envisaged the church as a community marked by love, influence, sacrifice, adventure, courage, generosity, and strength.

As a ‘City on Hill’, this dynamic and vibrant community would stand tall in its generation and emanate a bold and powerful light for the good of all people, and the glory of God. Here at ‘City on A Hill’ we want you to embrace all that Jesus has for us.  We are not just a place to visit, but also a vision to live.

We believe God loves Melbourne and wants to renew all things with the gospel of Jesus. The 'gospel' is the amazing news that God the Father has sent God the Son Jesus into the world to live, die and rise again, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have life now and for all eternity.

To this end we are working together to build healthy and growing churches that bring people to the gospel, build people up in the gospel and send people out with the gospel.

CORE VALUES

At City on a Hill, we value:

God - God, (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), is the loving creator, sustainer and redeemer of this world and our lives.  He stands supreme over the entire universe. Our ultimate purpose in life is therefore to enjoy and honor God with all our heart, mind, body and soul.

God’s Gospel  The 'gospel' is the amazing news that God the Father has sent God the Son Jesus Christ into the world to live, die and rise again, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have life now and for all eternity. We therefore exist to both know this gospel and make it known. It is the hope of our lives, our church and our city.

God’s Word  God reveals Himself and His purpose for the world in revelation of Jesus Christ and His Word (Old and New Testament). The bible is reliable, truthful and our final authority. We therefore value and encourage the study and the proclamation of God’s Word in personal reflection, home groups and our main meetings.

God’s Power  God demonstrates his power in us by transforming us into the likeness of His Son. He does this in the power of the Holy Spirit and through the means of regularly bible study, prayer and meeting with other disciples for mutual encouragement and support. We therefore seek to not only speak of Christ, but also to become more like Him in all we do.

God’s Community  The gospel creates a new community which not only nurtures individuals but serves as a sign of God's coming kingdom. As His community we therefore seek to love and support one-another and provide a safe and accepting environment for people to explore Christian faith and grow in Christ-likeness.

God’s Gifts  As the body of Christ we believe that every member of the church is equipped by the Holy Spirit to serve one-another and the community for the building up of His kingdom. We therefore encourage and assist members to explore and utilize their spiritual gifts in accordance with God’s good and pleasing will.

God’s City  God loves Melbourne and is seeking to transform her for our good and His glory. We therefore seek to be good missionaries who are connected with our culture in order that we may communicate/demonstrate the transformative power of the gospel through word and deed.

OUR BELIEFS

City on a Hill exists so that people can come to know more about Jesus, and how to get on board with His mission in the world. We don’t expect everyone to be Christian; in fact we love the fact that many are coming to check out Jesus for the first time.

As a church we seek to uphold the central truths of the Christian faith, including:

  • The unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in the Godhead
  • God’s loving creation of the universe, the creation of humanity in His image, the value of the creation sustained and ruled by God, the final resurrection, and the renewal of the world at the return of Christ
  • The universal sinfulness of humanity since the fall, rendering men and women subject to God’s judgment
  • The conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit and His birth by the Virgin Mary
  • God’s gracious provision of redemption from the guilt, penalty, and power of sin only through the sacrificial death, as our representative and substitute, of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God
  • The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, His ascension, heavenly reign, return, judgment, and glory
  • The church as the people of God, the body and the bride of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit
  • The call to ministry in the church and in the world, including the ministries of word and sacrament, evangelism and church planting, pastoral care, mutual ministry, and cross-cultural world mission
  • The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to make the death of Christ effective in the individual sinner, granting him or her repentance towards God, and faith in Jesus Christ
  • The indwelling, work, and gifts of the Holy Spirit in believers and in the church
  • The divine inspiration and infallibility of Holy Scripture as originally given and it’s supreme authority in all matters of  faith and conduct

WHAT IS CHRISTIANITY?

Jesus was born 2000 years ago and is today the most famous and influential person to have ever lived.  Author and historian H.G. Wells says: "I am not a believer, but I must confess that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very center of history."

Jesus is known and worshiped for his claim to be God, his miraculous healings, life changing teaching and his work of salvation, which he accomplished on the cross.  Peter, an eyewitness of Jesus, says, ‘Christ died, the righteous for the unrighteous that we might be brought home to God’ (1 Peter 3v18).  This means that on the cross, Jesus the perfect God-man died in our place, as a substitute for our sin and rebellion against each other, this world and God. Jesus did this so that through faith we might be forgiven, and reconciled to our Father in Heaven forever.

The testimony of history and scripture also reveals that three days after Jesus’ death, he rose again. This triumphant victory demonstrated his ultimate power over sin, Satan and death, and the future glory for those who trust in Him.

To find out more about this good news, let me encourage you to download some of our free sermons, and visit one of our services at City on Hill. We’d also love to give you a free copy of the gospel of Jesus, recommend other resources and answer any questions you have.

MEET OUR PASTORS

Guy Mason - Pastor

Guy Mason is the Pastor of City on a Hill. He is married to Vanessa and has two super-cute children, Summer and Zach. He loves living in Melbourne and supporting the Demons (that’s the footy club!)

Guy encountered the person and work of Jesus for the first time when he was a teenager. This ignited a life altering passion to both know Jesus and make Him known. Prior to planting City on a Hill, Guy worked in media/communications and served in youth ministry.  He has a BA in Public Relations and a Masters of Divinity from Ridley Melbourne. He was ordained by the Anglican Church in 2008.

“I am continually amazed at what God is doing in and though ‘City on a Hill.’ We step into the future with much anticipation and excitement.”

Facebook - Twitter
Luke Nelson - Associate Pastor

Luke is our Connections Director, overseeing our Connect Groups, welcoming, and serving opportunities. He is (newly!) married, to the beautiful Evanna, who doesn't understand sport at all but still lets him watch it (sometimes...).

Luke grew up going to church and knew lots of stuff about God, but didn't really know God personally until he began asking questions as a teenager. Since then he's grown in knowledge and love for God, and been blessed with many great teachers along the way.

Luke did a BA at Melbourne Uni, and did Honours in History, with a thesis on Australian cricket! He's currently studying at Ridley Theological College.

“I first came to City on Hill to research a design project. I loved it, and decided to make it my church. I then began working for the team in early 2008. This is the best job I’ve ever had; it's challenging, fun, exciting and rewarding.”

Facebook - Twitter
Nik Mimlo - Associate Pastor

Nik is responsible for the Creative Arts team and the co-ordination of the Sunday Services at City on a Hill.

Having spent the last 13 years working in Senior Management roles in the Finance sector, Nik realised that his true passion was to see people impacted by God through worship. Nik is married to Sharon, and moved to Melbourne (from Auckland, New Zealand) 2 years ago.

"Being a resident of Docklands, I am constantly amazed by people’s longing for community and connection. It’s great to know that City on a Hill is a church where people can find this community/connection.”

Colossians: ‘The New You’

In Christ we are ‘made new.’  We are a new creation, born of water and the Spirit.

But, is that life any different from the old?  What does it mean to be ‘new’?  What is the next step in my walk with Christ?

In his letter to the Colossians Paul speaks to a young and growing church working out what authentic Christianity is all about.  Surrounded by a world of religion, false gods, and earthly temptation, they are coming to grips with their new identity.

His honest and direct teaching helps them - and us - understand our new self and what it means to be ‘alive in Christ.’
